THE UNINTENTIONAL TEACHER

It would seem that we have been blogging recently about parents as role models. In this age when reality TV provides way too many examples of life we need to pay closer attention to the kind of role models we project for our children. I see young adults that have a "fairy tale" image of marriage and how things should work. When this does not simply fall into place they can and do feel like they failed. As parents we need to be more cognizant of the impact out choices and actions have on our children. I think I am seeing this as a list.

• PREOBLEM SOLVING
• RELATIONSHIP ISSUES
• BALANCE IN LIFE
• SPIRITUALITY
• NUTRITION
• MOVEMENT (exercise)
• RELAXATION
• FAMILY TIME
• EXTENDED FAMILY
• TASK COMPLITION
• WORK ETHIC
• SELF CARE
• HEALTH
• FINANCES
• GROUP MEMBERSHIP
• NEIGHBORHOOD/COMMUNITY

I guess this list could be endless. There are so many things that we model to our children we need to think about how we respond in most situations. Even when our children are very small they are like little video recorders. They learn from whatever behaviors we present. So, the bottom line is that between, TV and us that is the training ground for their behavior. I tend to not watch reality TV but recently saw a part of a "talent" show and realized that besides talent the winner was the one with the best sob story. Now we have a political race in front of us. It doesn't matter who you are for or against. Are these the models you want to give your children? Since TV works against us, we have a greater need to model what we want our children to become. This is not so hard. Just think before you act. It reminds me of a song from long ago that talked about a father being too busy for his son and now the son is grown and has no time for the father. Simply ask yourself this question: Do I want to see this behavior in my child later? Sherri
