POLITICS AND YOUR TEEN

Lots of attention is being given in the media to the upcoming presidential election this fall.  Unless your teen has been living under a rock lately, he has to have heard something about the upcoming election.  A teen's reaction to politics usually falls into one of three categories:  indifference, the same position of their parents, or the opposite position of their parents.  How your teen expresses his political ideology can tell you how he sees the world and how he is developing.  Sometimes teens want to please their parents so they adopt the parents' political ideas as their own.  Other teens may want to differentiate themselves from their parents so they will adopt the opposite viewpoint.  And some teens just view political issues as something "boring that older people are interested in."  Talking about politics to your teen and getting him to express his viewpoint can be helpful for you in understanding your teen.  You need to make him feel accepted by you regardless of whether you agree with his thoughts or not.  This can open a door to get him to listen to your viewpoints also and start a real dialogue with him.  Dr. Debra
