Early voting for midterm elections is taking place in most states and election day is in just a few days. I know that at times I wonder about the importance of my vote and if it makes any difference. But, I always know that I have to vote; it's part of living in a democracy.
Let's be honest, I know I'm not the only one that at times feels complacent about voting. As parents we need to model the importance of voting. Our teens need to realize that voting is part of the responsibility of living in a democray. From an early age if we talk about voting, how we will vote, how we make those decisions, and why it matters they will develop the understanding that voting is important.
I remember when my daughter turned 18. It was important for her to go buy a lottery ticket. I was confused and asked why. She said 18 is an important birthday but there a no right of passage when you turn 18. Another right of passage is registering to vote. You can make that an important event to underscore the importance of voting. As your teen becomes a voter have discussions about the candidates to help them make these very important decisions. Understand they may not always agree with you about their vote and that can be difficult. Still, encourage them to vote what they think is right from a place of thoughtfulness. Sherri
