Empathy - the ability to understand how another person may feel in a situation - is an important concept for our teens to develop. Being able to understand others feelings helps your teen think about interactions and relationships on a different level. Your teen will have healthier relationships when he is able to show empathy for others; hopefully, he will wish to have relationships with teens who show him empathy also.
Can we help our teens learn how to develop empathy? I have two suggestions to help your teen with this - and I believe that the earlier you start this, the better the outcome. First, help your teen develop empathy by showing him empathy. Talk about how you think he might be feeling about a situation and be sure to comment on both positive (happy, excited) feelings as well as negative (sad, angry) feelings. Your comments will help your teen reflect upon his reactions - and he will note how he feels when others are in tune with him. Another way you can help your teen is by watching television shows or movies and pausing the show when a character is experiencing a strong emotional response. Ask your teen to identify the feeling state of the character and to talk about why that person might be feeling that way. You might be surprised as to the conversation that might develop around this.
Talking about feelings is another way your can help your teen develop into a happy adult.
