This week in Fort Worth there was an unnerving MVA on the freeway. I young man (I think 23) was intoxicated, went the wrong way on the freeway and hit an oil tanker truck which exploded and the truck driver was killed. I stay confused about why we drink and drive. I really do understand this but I still do not. In my role as therapist of adolescents I have heard too many stories about drinking and driving.
As parents we don’t want our children to drink at all. I am in agreement with this. But I think that setting some ground rules in case they break that is imperative. Both as teenagers and as adults we want them to understand the gravity of drinking and driving.
When my oldest daughter lived in LA they would do random checks even on the freeways when the bars closed and other such times. I guess it would make you wonder how Lindsey Lohan gets away with this so often. Although my daughter has always been good about drinking and not driving she became more vigilant from living in an area with this kind of monitoring.
Only one of my daughters drank as a teenager and she understood that when she planned to drink (which was not often) she needed to tell me and tell me the plan to be safe. She knew I would prefer she not make this choice but if she did I didn’t want her to sneak around about it.
As parents we need to take a very hard line about drinking and driving and as citizens we should encourage things like the procedure in LA. When I first moved to Texas I did not know what a roadie was. I was shocked to learn that you would take a drink with you for the road. How much sense did that make? This needs to change and we need to be both responsible parents and citizens. This accident in Fort Worth and others like it should never have happened. Sherri
