This may be quite obvious to most of you, but I still see teen patients whose parents do not think about how irritable a hungry teen can be! And those same parents are surprised when their conversations do not get any response from the teenager. Teens cannot think well when hungry - and this reflects back to the neurochemistry that Sherri referenced. After eating, dopamine is released from the brain and the person who just ate feels a sense of well-being and calmness. This is probably the very best time to discuss problematic areas and how problem-solving can occur. Just remember, wait until after dinner not before to deal with important issues. Dr. Debra
