Summer is just around the corner and teenagers are going to be out for the summer. It seems like a good time to start talking about these things. Let's start with summer jobs. I see lots of teenagers and they seem to divide into two camps; those that are industrious and want a summer job and those that emphatically do not. I am always surprised to hear someone say to me this is my summer vacation I don't have to do anything I don't want to do. How have we created this?
I believe that teenagers need jobs. It is certainly more difficult in this economy. Teenagers need jobs to develop the skills needed for later employment and to develop good responsibility skills for life. They need a job with a regular schedule, tasks to be completed each day and a boss. When my daughter was a teen her first job was for a friend's father in a warehouse filling orders. She could work when she wanted and however long she wanted. This did not provide those skills. I believe that when an actual paying job is unavailable a volunteer job is just as good; however, no money that is a down side for the teen. Our teenagers do not have a very good sense of charity even in the schools that require some volunteer hours for graduation it is just about getting the hours in. It is true that some teens are really creative about giving back but not most. If what they can find is a volunteer job this can help with securing a paying job later. A volunteer job needs regular hours, consistent tasks and a boss. By the age of 16 this should not be negotiable.
I will continue on this topic and address issues related to money etc. Sherri
Teaching the teens on household chores is a must because parents don't have to do all the stuff. Teaching them to be responsible will make them realize each others worth.

It is said that our house is the training ground for children. Thus, it is very important to teach each child how to do household chores. If we can train them to be cooperative, then there is a big possibility that they can appreciate the work of other people.
