Americans will be celebrating July Fourth, the birthday of our country, this week. Many of us look forward to having a day off work. Teens who are enjoying being out of school for summer see this as a holiday. And this is a holiday that should be celebrated!
Safety should come first in celebrating this holiday: firewords can be unsafe if used in dry areas or teens are not well-supervised in their use. Alcohol is often around during these holiday celebrations - and your teen may be celebrating with friends. Be sure to talk to your teen about the risks of drinking and how to safely have fun. Check with the parents of any friends who your teen is spending time with over the holiday to feel comfortable that no alcohol is served to teens.
But with all the fun and celebrations, don't forget to spend a few minutes remembering with your teen what the birthday of America represents. We Americans have a rich legacy of freedom which came at a high cost. This Fourth of July all of us should spend some moments of remembrance of those who gave us our freedom.
Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.
