The Olympics are exciting to watch. All of us are probably cheering for the USA as we watch these games. The discipline and talent of these individuals is truly amazing. I saw a post by a friend on facebook that she did not think she would ever do anything resembling what these athletes have done. As much as I admire the Olympians, I cannot help but think that many people every day deserve gold medals for things that many take for granted.
What and how do we teach our teens about being a gold medalist in life? I think we as parents have to be clear with ourselves about what we think is really important. Relationships that are healthy and committed, work that is meaningful by providing for our family and aiding others in some way, and faith are important to us. Helping our teens understand why these things are important will help them start to improve themselves in such a way that someday they will realize that you can be a gold medal winner in how you live your life.
