Sharon has written blogs comparing free range versus attachment parenting. This information gives us a great deal to think about related to parenting styles, specifically which type of parenting fits best with our own approach.
Each style of parenting has positive points. Free range parenting involves assessing your child/teen's ability to cope in situations in which parents may not be present. The free range parent determines if his teen can go unsupervised to engage with the neighborhood, etc. Giving your teen some freedom to explore and learn hou to handle situations does have some merit. Your teen can develop more problem-solving skills. The only concern is that the teen may find himself in a situation in which he does need adult help but is unable to assess a parent or other adult to help him.
Attachment parenting talks about making your child/teen a highest priority in your life and working with him in such a way that he feels secure. The parent makes a lot of efforts to aid attachment and structure their life in such a way to do so. A positive benefit to this type of parenting is that your child/teen will feel secure and bonded to parents. The concern with this type of parenting is that your teen may not be able to make decisions independently of parents and he may struggle with functioning on his own.
Think about your own style of parenting. Which parenting style fits you best?
