Christmas is two weeks from today. The media is letting us know that we need to be shopping to get everything completed in time for the holidays. We see these messages on television, on billboards, in the newspapers, on the internet. Our teens are noting these messages as well. So how do we handle the "countdown to Christmas" with our teens? Balancing the commercial messages with the spiritual meaning of the holiday is not an easy task. Realistically, we do look to give gifts so shopping is a part of the season. One way to think of shopping at this time of year is that more jobs are provided to people during this time. So your shopping helps the economy in the real way of providing employment. Spiritual preparation is very important during this time - and your teen may not get this message from anyone other than you. By spiritual preparation I am referring to reflections on faith and the importance of this time of year. I am also thinking about taking stock of relationships, especially family members and friends. Spending time with family, friends, and faith is a way to make the most of the holiday season. Help your teen think about how he is going to spend his time. And don't forget to factor in fun!
